Jason Christopher Campbell, 35, was convicted Friday of concealing a death after police discovered his mother's charred remains burning on a mattress in the backyard of their Homer, Georgia home.

Marie Campbell, 62, was reported missing on January 6, 2025, after her belongings were found at the residence. Jason Campbell initially called police on January 8 to report that his mother had been picked up three days earlier by someone unknown to him. When questioned further, his account shifted.

On January 7, police said Jason Campbell called 911 and told dispatchers that his mother had been "abducted by aliens." Officers responded and found a fire burning in the backyard with a burned mattress and human remains nearby. They also located a vehicle with one seat either missing or folded down.

The remains were identified as belonging to Marie Campbell. Prosecutors argued that Jason Campbell burned his mother's body to conceal her death. He was not charged with causing her death. Following a five-day trial, a judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
