Estela Torres-Henriquez, 48, faces a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after police say she held a butter knife to her daughter's neck in Homestead, Florida because the girl was taking too long to get ready for school.
The incident occurred at a residence in the 500 block of SW 3rd Street. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Torres-Henriquez used the butter knife to unlock her daughter's bedroom door and began yelling at the girl for being late. Police wrote that the defendant waved the knife near her daughter's face and then placed it on the side of her neck. The victim told officers she feared for her life.
The student reported the alleged abuse to police at South Dade Senior High School. A sister also gave a similar account to officers and said she was concerned their mother would threaten her as well.
Torres-Henriquez went to the Homestead Police Department for an interview with the Department of Children and Families. After being read her Miranda rights, she said she used the butter knife only to open the bedroom door because her daughter was late for school. She denied threatening the victim with the knife or holding it near her neck.
Police arrested Torres-Henriquez and held her at the Miami-Dade Jail on a $5,000 bond.
