But this rush to judgment, fueled by the genuine power of DNA evidence, may be creating new categories of risk that the criminal justice system isn't equipped to handle.

Consider what's happening in real time. DNA databases have grown exponentially. Technology improves. Cold cases reopen. The public applauds these developments, and rightfully so in many instances. Yet beneath this success story sits a harder question: Are we moving so fast to prosecute based on DNA matches that we're bypassing the very scrutiny these cases deserve?

The issue isn't whether DNA evidence matters. It does. The issue is whether a DNA match should compress investigation timelines in ways that might shortcut other critical examination.
