The Lagos State Government commits to completing a Transfer Loading Station at Olusosun by year-end 2026, capable of processing 2,500 metric tonnes of waste daily for transport to the Material Recovery Site in Ikorodu. Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab made the announcement, signaling the state's infrastructure expansion to manage municipal solid waste more efficiently.

The project addresses Lagos' growing waste management challenges in Africa's most populous city. The transfer station will serve as an intermediary processing hub, consolidating waste collected across residential and commercial areas before transport to the recovery facility. This two-stage system reduces the frequency of individual collection vehicles traveling to distant disposal sites, lowering operational costs and environmental impact.

Material recovery sites extract recyclable materials from waste streams, diverting usable resources from landfills while generating revenue through the sale of recovered materials. The Ikorodu facility will process incoming waste to separate plastics, metals, paper, and organic matter for reuse or proper disposal.

Lagos generates approximately 12,000 to 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, making waste management infrastructure critical to public health and urban sustainability. The state has pursued a multi-pronged approach combining collection improvements, treatment facilities, and private sector partnerships under its Integrated Waste Management System.

The Olusosun site holds particular significance as a former dumping ground that the state has repositioned into a modern waste management facility. Previous plans included landfill rehabilitation and environmental remediation efforts at the location.

Completion by year-end 2026 provides Lagos approximately two years to execute construction and testing phases. The timeline aligns with broader state objectives to eliminate indiscriminate dumping and improve waste segregation at source, which feeds into the recovery process.
