Lagos State Government will complete a transfer loading facility at Olusosun designed to process 2,500 metric tonnes of municipal waste daily by year-end 2026. The facility will transport collected waste to a Material Recovery Site in Ikorodu, according to Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources.

The project addresses waste management infrastructure gaps in Lagos, Africa's most populous city. The transfer station represents part of the state's integrated waste management strategy, enabling more efficient movement of refuse from collection points to processing and recovery facilities.

The Material Recovery Site at Ikorodu will extract recyclable materials from incoming waste streams, diverting usable materials from landfills. This infrastructure reduces strain on existing disposal sites and creates economic value through material recovery operations.

Lagos generates approximately 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, making waste management a persistent governance challenge. Transfer loading stations distribute this volume across multiple processing points rather than routing all waste through single endpoints. The Olusosun facility will handle roughly one-fifth of the state's daily waste output.

The project falls under Lagos's Environmental Management and Protection Law and aligns with the state's Sustainable Development Goals targets for waste reduction and environmental protection. Regulatory oversight involves the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, which monitors compliance with waste management standards and environmental impact protocols.

Completion by year-end 2026 provides the state with additional capacity as population growth continues driving waste generation upward. The facility's daily 2,500-metric-tonne capacity creates operational flexibility for the state's waste collection contractors and licensed waste managers who operate throughout the metropolitan area.

The investment reflects growing pressure on Lagos to modernize waste infrastructure systems developed decades ago. Private waste management operators licensed under state regulations will utilize the facility as a hub for consolidating routes and optimizing vehicle movement efficiency across the sprawling megacity.
